A Late-Evening Walmart Excursion

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

A few nights ago, I trekked down to my local Walmart to buy paintbrushes.

(In case you need evidence)

While I was there, I checked out the pitiful clothing department. For the sake of full disclosure, I confess that I bought a pair of Miami Dolphins lounge pants.

(I hope there is no dirty bomb in these comfort trousers.)

Anyways, two things caught my eye; 1) the Walmart clothing line called George 2) the dreadful dressing rooms.

George is not a name for a clothing line. Sorry. I have a Greek friend. His name is George. He is one of my favorite people. But his fashion sense is god awful. The clothing line George is even worse.

(Curious about George)

The coolest part of this story? The following morning, I read an article in the WSJ about Walmart struggling with their clothing line because 1) “George” has zero brand recognition. And 2) the clothing department, including the dressing rooms, are a freaking mess!

i have been linkdumped

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

At the end of yesterday, 60 people from Gap Inc visited my site. I know this thanks to Google Analytics, which FYI, has just launched a special feature just for Geckout! That’s a huge chunk of my traffic. Dang. I really hope they stay in business!

My call for human writes has been heard in the Netherlands. In the linkdump. I think this is a good thing. Maybe not.

And Page Six of the NY Post continues to torment Keith Olbermann. In case you lost count, this is the 4th time in the span of (less than) a month.

Piperlime, Rachel Zoe, Go Live

Monday, October 16th, 2006

This evening I am rife with mixed emotions. One half of me wants to eat meat for dinner. The other half of me wishes to eat milk. And the third half isn’t even hungry.

For months, I have blogged about the new Gap shoe site called piperlime. I breathlessly reported all the latest stuffs. But all good things come to an end. Except for Rocky sequels.

This afternoon, piperlime has gone live. Over the weekend, I decided to end my prolific Gap bloggings. It was a great ride. However, I need to focus on internet video.

Many of you at Gap have become regular visitors to my blog. Already today, 26 of you have stopped by to say hello. Thanks for taking the time!

ga (2)1.JPG

Will I ever again blog about Gap? Probably. But not nearly as often. Perhaps a video clip from time to time.

A tear rolls town my cheek. Metaphorically.

I will not critique the site, though there is much that can be said! OK. For old times sake, I will point out one Gap-mishap on the new site :-)

In the Rachel Zoe corner, the box is titled “Our Latest Expert”. Yet right beneath that you state “Say Hello to Rachel Zoe our very first editor”. So I ask: how is it possible to be both the First & Latest at the very same time?”.

Gap, I love you. Even your silly marketing efforts! Please keep in touch!
xoxo,
Shmuly

How Old is Rachel Zoe?

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

As of late, or “lately” if you prefer skimping on words, the name Rachel Zoe has been showing up all over the place. In fact, this morning I opened up the mail box and a Rachel Zoe name tag popped right out. Uncanny.

Just so you know, Rachel Zoe was not always Rachel Zoe. Her real name is Rachel Zoe Rosenzweig. Awesome! Who knows? She may even be my third-cousin or something.

Not kidding about her original name. You can read about it in the Rachel Zoe wiki entry. But here’s the cool part; according to this article, Rachel Zoe is either 34 or 35. However, her wiki entry says she was born in 1962 which means…do the math…that Ms. Zoe is in fact 44 or 45.

Do you reckon her agent, who had her drop “Rosenzweig”, also sliced ten years off her age?

Piperlime in the “real news”!

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

Last week, I posted a YouTube clip addressed to Gap employees. The clip has since been taken down, by me, due to its shoddy quality and my rather shabby appearance.

In the clip, for the unfortunate who missed it, I mentioned that a Business Paper would be publishing an article on Piperlime. I did not lie.

On Friday, San Francisco Business Times writer, Sarah Duxbury, wrote an article about piperlime: Piperlime — the shoe fits, Gap wears it.

Most who you who visit the blog are familiar with the majority of the article. Here’s what’s new:

1) Piperlime will also be selling shoes from Taryn Rose & Mephisto.

2) Gap denies the site will launch on October 16th. Perhaps they are having delays. Who knows?

3) The site, as per Zappos, will be offering free shipping and free returns. (The domain ” werejustlikezappos.com” was the original site name, until piperlime saved the day :-)

4) Alex Clark is the Gap spokesperson quoted. I think he might have been high while giving the following comment “”Now we’re able to dress our customers from head to toe, and that’s something they said they wanted.” Problem with this statement is that the Gap brand already sells shoes! Ooops :-)

Jcrew Flatters the Gap

Monday, October 9th, 2006

They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery. (Not sure who “they” is. But whatever.) Gap therefore should be feeling quite flattered. Either already. Or after someone from Gap Inc notices what has taken place.

Some basic background; Gap introduced the Skinny Black Pants. The ads featured Audrey Hepburn. Gap Inc has been ecstatic with the results of the concept/campaign. You can watch the commercial on YouTube.

Guess what Jcrew just introduced? None other than “the little black pants”. Screen shot below from Jcrew email below. Link to the page.

So many decisions. Do I want the black skinny pants, or the little skinny pants? Ms. Hepburn must be rolling in her grave.

Stay tuned for the next episode of “War of the Trousers”.

Toby Lenk, Piperlime, on Wikipedia

Sunday, October 8th, 2006

Gap will soon have a fifth brand. It’s about time they started a Gapincpedia! If only I had the time…

Anyways, here is the Toby Lenk entry on Wikipedia. Impressive that piperlime is mentioned.

Toby Lenk manages all the ecommerce business (and more) at Gap Inc. As an adult, Toby Lenk was CEO of eToys. As a child, his favorite toys were cowboy figurines and scuba G.I. Joe.

His entry could use some editing. If only I had the time….

Just some interesting Wiki gossip; there is (of course) an entry about Gap Inc. CEO Paul Pressler. However, his entry is clearly biased and harps on his Disney days.

The Gap Report

Sunday, October 8th, 2006

A few days ago, Gap Inc reported their September sales. Link. These are the glamorous gleanings from the fiscal release:

1) Gap Product Red will hit stores in mid-October.

2) The Audrey Hepburn hype has been fruitful.

3) Overall, comparable stores sales decreased 3% versus last year. The previous year, sales decreased by 6%. So, essentially, this is good news. Sort of.

4) Banana Republic is the only brand with positive sales versus previous year.

So the question is; if comparable store sales are down by 3%, how are overall sales up by 4%?

The answer (at least partial) is that while physical stores sales are down, the online sales for Gap Inc. are up!

The audio and video are not in synch. Plus I am having a bad hair & face day year.

Hope you loves it!

Banana Republic Outnudes Abercrombie

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

A&F is making money. Their brand is hot. The naked models must be doing the trick. So Banana Republic is trying out the same tactic. Their homepage, bananarepublic.com, is littered with models in a state of nakedness. It’s a good thing BR is giving away $15K worth of clothing!

Why can’t Gap get their act together? Why do I need to point this stuff out? What do I mean? OK; on the Gap.com homepage, like I pointed out earlier, Piperlime.com is listed as a Gap Inc. brand. However, on the actual Gap Inc. brand page, their is not even a trace of piperlime.

Guys, how do you think this makes piperlime feel? Confused. Sad. Abandoned. Come on! Let’s keep it real and consistent!
