Dispatches “Undercover Mosque” on YouTube

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

Saw this the other day. A UK channel conducted an undercover investigation of several prominent Mosques in the UK. No clue why the channel didn’t approach me to be their clandestine reporter. The program aired January 15th, 2007.

It’s interesting to note that before YouTube, I would not have been able to watch any of this. There are many interesting comments on these clips. It’s a six part-series. First slice is below, if you like it, then you can watch the other five.

Part 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

P.S. There is also a rebuttal on YouTube; 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The Amazing Racist

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Will not even discuss the latest absence of my blogging. Please don’t even bring it up.

Today, a news item reminded me of this clip of the Amazing Racist (Ari Shaffir).

The Amazing Racist makes Borat seem politically correct. He’s much more daringly funny and while Borat makes fun of the Jews, The Amazing Racist makes fun of pretty much everyone else, including Asians. Perhaps one of the reasons why TAR has not reached celeb fame as did Borat.

Like Borat, The Amazing Racist does not appear to be a genuine racist (not that there’s anything wrong with that; kidding!) and is merely doing some nutty stuff for entertainment value.

I was however a bit disturbed when The Amazing Racist begins harassing the women in the Mosque. That just aint right.

This clip is the craziest of them all.

Filling the Gap

Friday, January 12th, 2007

Out of the goodness of my lungs, I created a new product for the Gap.

It’s tres cool. At least IMO. Did you know that IMO stands for “in my opinion”.

Taking this abbreviation to further lengths, my friend uses the term IMHO as in “in my honest opinion”. Wild! It is a super time saver, especially if use the expression quite often.

The new product can be viewed on this clip.

P.S. You can also check it out at www.thegapvomitbag.com!

Amazon Employees Read (blogs)

Friday, January 12th, 2007

In case you needed more proof that Amazon is on a mission to divide and conquer the spoils of ecommerce; I have some for you.

Keep in mind that Amazon is not new to the scene. They predate pretty much everyone on the web. Which means they’ve got more know-how and experience than Walmart and myself put together….JK.

Anyways, yesterday, after a long dry-spell of blog-relief, I wrote about the new shoe and handbag site from Amazon.com. The site is called endless.com.

Guess what? Nope. I am not pregnant. Close though. 29 Amazon employees read my blog post. The very same day I published it.

What’s the big deal? Well, I have a tiny blog. Sort of like a mini-me blog. Yet Amazon still managed to FIND my post and share it with the fellow suits. Compare this to Gap where most employees there are of the belief that a blog is a mild medical condition.

FYI, for the Amazon peeps reading this; I have a cool idea for a viral video clip about endless.com. Want to assist me with this?

An Idea For the TV Networks

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

This morning. Me. Breakfast table. In my hands is a newspaper so fresh that the ink is dripping into my protein shake.

The paper no doubt is the WSJ. From the start of 2007, the paper is much slimmer, which makes me suspect that Dow Jones hired Rachel Zoe as creative director.

The section? That would be the Personal Journal. Usually, not much for me in this area. Many articles on retiring, investing and other things I can only wish for.

The article was on the front page of the section. It discussed the TV programming available on the web. For whatever reason, the article chose to focus specifically on the TV networks. CBS, NBC, FOX and ABC.

Anyways, the thing is, that the piece mentions that some of these sites update shows on an ad hoc basis. Basically, there lacks a consistency of web programming. Especially when compared to the old fashioned television, which has a TV Guide magazine, programming channels and that annoying friend of your who calls you every time 24 is on the tellie.

My hero!

So, I am here to offer a solution that will enhance the online TV viewing experience of web browsers. Here’s what the networks need to do:

1) Set up a simple email notification process; whereby if I visit CBS to watch episodes of CSI, I can enter my email address and receive an email notice whenever CBS uploads a new episode. Simple, eh?

Keep in mind that this is also a kickass opportunity for the interactive ad departments to build an email databases…and sell newsletter ads on a CPM basis.

2) Another option is to offer an RSS feed. Again, it would mean setting up an RSS feed that would update each time a new show is unleashed. Duh.

Wake up fellows! It’s 2007. Do you really want Apple Inc. to consume you for breakfast!

Get on this ASAP.

xoxo,
Shmuly

Undeserving Credit from a USA Today Blog

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Big stuff. Not that big actually. Just stuff.

Last week, my grandmother became an online celeb. The funniest thing is that to my knowledge, she has never used the internet. You can more about it here.

So, Tech_Space, a blog on usatoday.com, had a posting about my Bubby with the caption “2007’s first online star?”

All cool. Especially since the writer gives me credit for something I didn’t do! Angela Gunn writes, …..”Mr. Tennenhaus is no stranger to making a splash on that site“….These words are linked to this article.

However, if you read the article, the site I made a splash with is not YouTube. It was MySpace! In fact, the title of the article was “If you see these CEOs on MySpace …”

Ooops! MySpace, YouTube; all in the same boat, right? Apparently so!

15 Seconds of CBS Fame

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

How long has it been since I blogged? When I last blogged, James Brown was still breathing!

CBS is giving you and me the chance of a lifetime. Of course, the previous sentence only applies to those of us who consider fifteen-seconds of TV exposure a “lifetime”.

You can find out more here.

FYI, this is part of the CBS initiative to become more interactive. There was an article in yesterday’s WSJ that mentioned the contest.

Anyways, your dedicated YouTube correspondent, me, has created his own 15-second clip. For whatever reason, when I watch my clip on my Dell craptop, the first few seconds are hazy.

So far, the response to my fifteen-seconds has been minimal yet positive. YouTube user fatgirlsrox had this to say: “yuck”. Thanks!

I am feeling pretty confident about this one…

Why I Decided to Boycott The Apprentice

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

Based on the title of this post, can anyone guess the forthcoming topic?

So, I decided to boycott the sixth season (and hopefully final) of The Apprentice.

YouTube clip. You can read about it here and there.

But “why?” you ask. What inspired this act of “courage”?

And now I will blog from the heart. Rosie and Donald Grump had a public feud. Trust me; this is a blessing for TV ratings. Both for The View and The Apprentice. That’s fine. You feel the urge to drum up some buzz for your show, then go ahead and lash out at Rosie.

The Miss America stuff needs a few more press mentions; grant the party girl another chance during a press conference. Hey, whatever works for you.

What got to me was when Donald called Rosie a “loser”. Why is she a loser according to Trump? Because she failed with her TV show and magazine. Donald on the other hand has billions of dollars. Naturally, he is a winner. This is Donald Trump ideology.

Please. That is so blatantly shallow. And stupid. What is success? Maybe it’s when you’re content with yourself. Maybe it’s also you are a pleasant person. One thing is certain; success cannot be defined as “being so full of yourself to the point where the public nauseous”.

Unfortunately, in our culture, too much emphasis is put on money and pseudo aspirations of success. I think that the Donald only encourages this false sense of success.

Hence my boycott. Do I believe that this will put a dent in The Apprentice ratings? Probably not. But I felt that I had to do my part. It’s up to the public to “tune-in or not to tune-in”.

Blog Tag - 5 things you didn’t know about me

Friday, December 15th, 2006

So, this morning I get an email from Kris, informing me that I have been blog tagged. Kris was tagged by shoemoney who was tagged by Andy who was tagged by Avinash, who beget Dave…sounds like Bible history.

The concept is to tag several fellow bloggers, who then also have to write 5 things you didn’t about them.
Kris, for those of you who don’t know, is a search expert. So, for example, if you lost your car keys, Kris can probably find them for you just by using Google. As the CEO of PepperJam, Kris believes in hard work and in hiring perfect 10’s.
Five things you don’t know about me? Don’t you already know everything about me? Guess not!
1) When I was in elementary school, I entered a spelling be. And lost. Guess which word I misspelled? The word “misspell”. I swear. True story. How humiliating is that? This is the first time I share this anecdote in public.
2) For the first few seasons of 24, I had a huge crush on Elisha Cuthbert. Then I felt that she was messing up the show; really out of place. So my crush dissipated.
3) I have a six-pack. Not beer; abs. No joke. If you are nice, perhaps I can post them one day on this blog.
4) I belong to the Jewish faith. No kidding. Both my parents are Jewish. Shmuel is not an Irish name. It is Jewish.
5) Before Sunset and Before Sunrise are my favorite flicks. So is Boiler Room.
And now I tag Rebecca, Ben, Jim, Mark Cuban & Kim.

my name is in a newspaper

You can read the article here. The YouTube link is here. Hope you like the clip. And funny blog story here.
